on 31 january 1930 mahatma gandhi sent a letter to viceroy lord irwin stating eleven demands...some of these were of general interest while others were specific demands of different classes....the most important was the demand to abolish the salt tax...salt was something that was consumed both by poor or rich in the country..but the british govt imposed tax even in salt..the letter that he sent stated that if the demands were not fulfilled by11 march the congress would launch a civil disobedience movement...but lord irwin did not agree amd mahatma gandhi started his movement with 78 trusted volunteers and marched over 240 miles from sabarmati ashram to dandi coast...they walked for 24 days...on 6 april he reached dandi and violated the salt law by manufacturing salt by boiling sea water..this marked the beginning of civil disobedience movement..
