On 13th December 1981, Polish Prime Minister General Wojciech Jaruzelski declared Martial Law in the country.

Reasons behind imposing martial law in Poland -

Most of the Polish historians have a opinion that the Solidarity was gaining popularity and Lech Walesa was becoming people's choice to support. So, General Jaruzelski led government got anxious and hence in an effort to crush Solidarity and restore the economic stability in the country, Jaruzelski imposed Martial Law in Poland.

General Jaruzelski himself claimed that he declared the Martial Law in Poland to avoid a Soviet military intervention ordered by a Kremlin fearing that Solidarity might rest one of its key satellites states from its grasp. Most of the Polish historians considered the claim by Jaruzelski of Soviet intervention as an effort to avoid responsibility for his decisions.

Many Polish historians hold different view. They believed that General Jaruzelski introduced Martial Law in Poland to allow the Communists to hold on to power.
