The thing is, Eastern Europe is your sombre older brother. The guy who reads the big thick books that you never get and then broods over the content. The guy who was there when your parents were struggling with the start of their careers, had no money, and therefore are used to penny pinching and being left alone most of the time while the rest of the time being the subject of the first tries of parenting. The one that saw all the fights when their marriage was on the rocks and you were still so young you could play with the Legos they never got. The brother that thinks you had it easy growing up and you’re so cute and naive in your bright outlook on life. The brother that held off the big bullies while you were playing with your marbles. The brother that tells you once you’re an adult that life isn’t as rosy as you always think it is, but then you reply that they are wrong and do your own thing. Your older brother that is always worse off than you are, and you call them lazy, while not caring about all the things they did for you and hindered them from making it in life.
