Both Gautama the Buddha and Mahavira were prophets… both of them stayed on Earth to live in service of humanity and to understand nature and abide by the laws of nature.

Actually in essence both are some. However, the followers of two Prophets chose certain specific philosophies of the two and thus creation of two different sects.

While the followers of Lord Sakyamuni founded Hinayana and Mahayana, the followers of Tirthankaras found the Digambaras and the Swetambaras.
