Humanism, sometimes referred to as Renaissance Humanism, was the political phenomenon of Italy's 14th and early 15th century thinkers, authors and civic leaders. The movement was established in keeping with the then medieval educational norms, which stressed realistic, pre-professional and scientific studies exclusively for the preparation of jobs, and in general by men only.

Explanation:

  • Two developments in the 15th century, the Byzantine Empire's collapse and European invention of printing changed humanism. The decline of Byzantium, evident for decades before the fall of Constantinople in the year 1453, forced Greek intellectuals to move west in order to be safer. Such authors carried with them Greek manuscripts and knowledge of the classical Greek language.
  • The Renaissance was based on new ideas (like humanism) which overthrow ancient beliefs and customs (like religious beliefs , practices, feudal traditions). The invention of the press thus allowed the whole of the Renaissance to be extended and improved further by these new ideas.
  • The humanism spread quickly from Florence across Italy throughout the XV century and was the most prominent of the Renaissance (1350 – 1600) intellectual movements. The establishment of schools also enabled its spread. The movement was then spread to  France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, England & Eastern Europe as well as Prague, Vienna & Budapest during the second half of the XV century.
  • Humanism played an significant part in education during the Renaissance. Humanists – advocates or practitioners of the Renaissance humanism – thought that knowledge could improve human beings drastically. The Renaissance Humanists set up schools for their instruction and published books about education.
  • One of the most profound and important schools was established and created by Vittorino da Feltre in 1423 in Mantua to provide the children of the ruler of Mantua with a Humanist education.
  • Humanists sought to establish a citizen who could speak and write with eloquence and consistency, and then partake in their societies' political life and persuade others to act in a noble and wise way. The study of classics, grammar, rhetoric, history, poetry and moral philosophy, was to achieve this. Humanist schools mixed Christianity with secular texts to establish for the rest of Europe a standard of education.
