- SOCIAL INEQUALITY:-The society in 18th century was divided into three estates clergy and nobility and Commoners.The first and second estates enjoyed certain privileges by birth.The third estate included lawyers, businessman ,farmers ,etc.They had to pay taxes .
- POLITICAL CAUSES:-The long years of Wars had drained resources of France and had made it debted.The meet the expenses of the country the revenues were expended which has to be paid by the third estate .
- ECONOMIC CRISIS:-The population of France also increased from 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789. Food grains were now in great demand. The price of bread shot up. Wages did not keep pace with rising prices. This led to subsistence crisis.
- STRONG MIDDLE CLASS:-A strong middle class in the third estate who were educated started telling other people that they one not equal to the people of 1st and 2nd estates .These educated class included lawyers and philosophers at the most .
- IMMEDIATE CAUSES:-On 5 may, 1789, Louis XVI called together an assembly of Estates General to pass proposals for new taxes. Third estates protested against this proposal but as each estate have one vote, the king rejected this appeal. They walked out of the assembly.
- RULER:- Louis XVI was an ineffective ruler and only concentrated of lavishness of his fort.
