Steps taken by Mathura Refinery help improve air quality around Taj
Updated: Dec 06, 2003, 00:00 AM IST
Agra, Dec 06: Stringent measures adopted by Mathura Refinery authorities have improved the ambient air quality of the Taj trapezium zone, a senior official of the refinery said here today.
Steps taken for protection of environment have resulted in improvement in air quality of the zone with the sulphur dioxide (so2) content in the air around the Taj going down to
3-5 mg per cubic metre against 15-20 mg per cubic metre reported by an expert committee on environment in 1977, deputy general manager of Mathura Refinery, M C Bansal, told reporters.
In the whole trapezium zone, so2 content is between 4-10 mg per cubic metre, he said. Air monitoring stations had been set up in 1980 at Farah in Mathura district, Keetham and Sikandra in Agra district and at Bharatpur, he said.
By using better fuel, beginning with low coke in 1991 and enhanced oxidation for chemical sludge reduction in 2000, sulphur dioxide emission had been reduced from 500 kg per hour in 1994 to 300-330 kg per hour in the year 2000, he added.
An ecological park, with a mini birds sanctuary had also been developed in the refinery precincts, Bansal said. As a step to reduce pollution, production of eco-friendly products had been introduced with the phasing out of lead and lowering of benzene content.
