In 1956, and Act was passed to recognise Sinhala as the only official language, thus disregarding Tamil. The governments followed preferential policies that favoured Sinhala applicants for university positions and government jobs. A new constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and foster Buddhism. All these government measures coming one after another gradually lead to the establishment of sinhala supremacy.

MEANINGS:

Stipulate means demand or command

foster means encourage or promote.

Buddism was made the original religion.

Sinhala was made the official language.

Government posts and services are reserved for sinhala speakers.

The tamil speakers were a minority and thus dominated by the sinhala speakers.
