During his eight decades of performance with shehnai, he was presented with several national and  international awards. Through his music he tried to spread peace and love in the world.

He received Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibushan followed by the Bharat Ratna in 2001.  He  therefore held on to all the top four civilians award of the country. He also hold the unique distinction of performing with the shehnai on the eve of India's  Independence in 1947
