The word bama means the entire female race. Umesh Chandra Dutta, a follower of Raja Rammohun Roy's Brahmo Samaj, established the Bamabodhini Sabha in August 1863. According to that meeting, she started publishing magazines to make the women of the society aware against various superstitious practices, veil practices, child marriage and satidah practices. It was mainly used to make women aware and through it many famous women also wrote poems or stories. The magazine was published for almost 60 years and wrote a history of the plight of women at that time.
