World economic depression:
Agricultural prices fell, exports declined, country side struck hard
Simon Commission:
Tory govt, Britain set up a commission under sir John Simon to look after the functioning of Indians; but this commission had no Indian members and wasn’t appreciated by Indian nationalists who later spread awareness of it. When the Simon commission came to India in 1920 it was welcomed by slogans like “ Go back Simon”.
These conditions were creating a major effect on the functioning of the NCM and finally after the vague proposal of dominion status by viceroy Irwin agitation amongst nationalists and crowds led to the civil disobedience movement.
