There are two factors which shaped nationalism in 19th century India.
1.Nationalism was deeply connected with anti-colonial movement. The sense of being oppressed provided a shared bond which tied all the people together.
2.Secondly,the sense of collective belonging was also due to a variety of cultural processes. Nationalist leaders toured extensively for collection of folklore.Indian glory was recalled by reinterpretation of history.The image of Bharat Mata was used to show love and respect for country.Gandhiji designed a national flag which which was a tricolor and had a charkha at the centre.Carrying the flag and holding it aloft was used to defy British.
