Before independence​ of India on 15th August 1947, there were two types of states that existed :

✓ BRITISH OCCUPIED TERRITORIES

These were the kingdoms and territories that came under the control of British Empire.

For example, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Jhasi.

✓ INDIAN PRINCELY STATES

These were the states that were pre administrated by some princes and kings.

Hyderabad, of The Nizam was one of the largest princely state of India.
