From my recollections of Plutarch, Augustus, FKA Octavianus, was small and slender in stature and suffered from “wheezing and acute shortness of breath,” preventing him from socializing as a young boy and participating in martial exercises as a young man. Rarely were men appointed to office or esteemed without martial training and experience in Roman upper society. Young men of nobility and wealth were expected to be chosen, often by default, as contubernales, modern day cadets, by appointed generals and governors. Octavianus, by sheer fortune, happened to catch the notice of his Grand-Uncle Caesar for his mental acuity and maturity. Caesar, took Octavianus as a contubernalis in his campaign against the remnant of the civil opposition reorganizing in Iberia. From that point Caesar set to carefully train Octavian in the basics of military tactics and organization. However, where Caesar was known to fight in the front lines and as a brilliant tactician; Octavianus would never be able to do so; therefore its held that Octavianus relied upon his legates and counsel to win battles. Also, hinted at in social circles, due to his physical impediments and precocious semblance and natural beauty, was a taboo in Roman Culture, homosexuality. Rumors abound, as are human nature. With all these impediments, and, a stroke of luck by catching the attention of the most powerful man in the empire, Octavianus was able to turn weakness into strengths, and excel with his natural gifts, and delegate his shortcomings.
