Vietnam was a colony of the French and French colonialism was opposed by the Vietnamese people in many forms and at many levels. But there were two different views among the Nationalist whether Vietnam should become modern or Nationalist.
First vision: Some intellectual of Vietnam supported the idea that domination of the west should be resisted and traditions of Vietnam should be strengthened. The main supporters of this idea work Phan Boi Chau & Prince Cuong De, who were the heads of the Revolutionary society.
2. Second vision: Some Vietnamese people were of the view that while resisting foreign domination ,Vietnam should learn something from the west. Phan Chu Trinh was the main supporter of this idea. He was greatly influenced by the democratic ideas of the West and was not in favour of completely rejecting the civilization of the West.
