Portia wanted to help Antonio as she believed that Antonio was a 'semblance of her soul' and had heard from Bassanio that Antonio was a very kind and generous man who had the noblest soul in all of Venice.
In order to help him, she decided to send a letter to Doctor Bellario who was an experienced legal expert. The letter contained the details of the case. She instructed Balthazar, the servant with whom she had sent the letter to bring all the documents and garments that Bellario gave him and come to the tranect where the common ferry which goes to Venice is docked and to give her the items there.
Her secret plan was to use the garments that Bellario had given to dress up as a lawyer. She told Nerissa that our husbands will see them before they expect it in Venice except, they will be dressed in such a habit that people will think that they are accomplished with things that they lack. She says that she’ll hold thee any wager, when they are both accoutred like young men, she’ll prove the prettier fellow of the two, and that she'll wear her dagger with the braver grace, and speak between the change of man and boy with a reed voice, and turn two mincing steps into a manly stride, and speak of frays like a fine bragging youth, and tell quaint lies like how honorable ladies sought her love, which when she denied, they fell sick and died. She says that she'll tell twenty of these puny lies and act so that men shall swear that she has discontinued school above a twelvemonth. She has within her mind a thousand raw tricks of these bragging jacks which she will use.
