at first he felt happy to have a snake as his visitor.but his educated mind said that golden brown snakes are vicious so hit the snake!.
he did so by hitting the snake with a stick but it did not hit it.he felt ashamed on himself later for doing such a sinful act.he couldn't forgive himself for doing this.he regrets his act and calls it a mean act.he feels it as a disgrace.

'Snake' is a great poem written by D.H.Lawrence.
After hitting the snake,
poet truely feels that his education has misguided his to hit such a harmless snake who was a visitor and honerable guest to his water trough.
He actually, by himself, didn't wanted to kill that creature as it did nothing to him. But, his inner voices of education which made him do so.
