Entropy of the system increases in case of decomposition of calcium carbonate

Explanation:

Entropy is a measure of thermal energy of system which is not used to gain useful work. generally it is a measure of disorder of molecules in a system.

  • Following chemical reaction takes place during the decomposition of CaCO_3
  • CaCO_3 \to CaO+CO_2\uparrow
  • Thus calcium carbonate releases carbon dioxide gas in products.
  • It means that solid is changed in to gas in this system.
  • Thus randomness of molecules increases from reactants to products during the decomposition of CaCO_3
  • Hence entropy of the system increases.
