The number of new kingdoms in many areas of the subcontinent grew as the Sultanate 's control declined slowly. Most of them started as Sultanate Provinces, but became independent later.

  • The Mughal Empire collapsed after the death of the Aurangzeb. His heirs were unable to govern the far-off regional kingdoms securely. The nobles were almost independent as a grou as the imperial authority weakened. and so began to dominate their kingdoms.
  • In the18th century the provincial kingdoms were headed by powerful governors. The Kingdom of Kashmir  was famous in the north of India; 2 Rajput 's powerful kingdoms developed, that is, Mewar and Marwar; the kingdoms of Gujarat & Malwa formed  in western India. In the Deccan regions of India Bahamani & Vijayanagar became powerful;the city of Ahmedabad was formed and those had strenghtened Gujarat's powe
  • Apart from these large kingdoms, the eastern coast (from Orissa to Tamil Nadu) had many other smaller kingdoms. The  profits from land tax and commerce contributed to all these kingdoms becoming very powerful in the subcontinent. In the kingdoms apart from trade,  literature, regional language,  local culture, architecture, modern religious ideas, & paintings  too developed.
  • However, all these regional kingdoms were constantly at war with each others.
