If you understand the units of acceleration, the answer comes easily. 10m/s² means that, each second, the object’s velocity increases by 10 m/s. The units are written m/s/s ( which could also be [m/s]/s ) quite often. That should reinforce that understanding of the meaning of acceleration.

So, if it starts at rest, and each of 5 seconds it increases the velocity by 10 m/s …

10 m/s + 10 m/s + 10 m/s + 10 m/s + 10 m/s = 50 m/s

The formula that does that without a long series of additions is

v = u + a*t
