Predecessor of 0?

What does a predecessor and a successor mean?

Predecessor refers to the previous term in a given sequence whereas successor means the next term in the given sequence.

In order to find a predecessor, we just need to subtract 1 from the given number, whereas in order to find the successor, we just need to add 1.

For eg. :-

Predecessor of 5 = 5 - 1 = 4

Successor of 5 = 5 + 1 = 6

Similarly,

Predecessor of 0 = 0 - 1 = - 1

But what if we are just referring to the Whole Numbers?

We know that numbers starting from 0 are known as whole numbers. It means, it includes 0 and all +ve integers. It do not include fractions.

So, if we are looking at a set of whole numbers only then 0 do not have any predecessor but if we are looking in general, which includes all types of integers then in this case - 1 s the predecessor of 0.
