The thyroid gland secretes a hormone thyroxine which controls the rate of metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins in the body. This thyroxine hormone contains iodine. If there is deficiency of iodine then there will be deficiency of thyroxine hormone in the body and will cause goitre . The neck appears to be swollen due to enlargement of thyroid gland

If intake of iodine is low in our diet then the hormone thyroxine will not be produced. Deficiency of thyroxine disturbs physical and metabolic activities beside causing goitre.
