The person driving the car is at motion and the car is also in motion. So if the brakes are applied suddenly, the due to inertia of motion, the driver tends to move in motion but the car will come to rest.
So it may cause serious injuries to the person.
So it is advised to fasten seat belts so that the accidents don't happen.
Hope it helps you.
