If a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, (i.e., in a solution having lower concentration of water or higher concentration of solute), the cell will lose water. More water molecules leave the cell than will enter resulting in the overall movement of water molecules out of the cell. The cell will, therefore, shrink and reduce in volume. This process is known as exosmosis.
