The leaf is the part where the food is made out of co2,sunlight and water.
Without the leaf the plant cannot prepare its food therefore not allowing it to grow and due to starvation it dies.

if the plant does not have any leaves it will not be able to make its own food and it will stop its natural processes of giving off oxygen , but the leaves may grow back because it could use its stored water and food for short period of time if can't make food
