Platelets are made in your bone marrow along with other kinds of blood cells. They travel through your blood vessels and stick together (clot) to stop any bleeding that may happen if a blood vessel is damaged.

The main function of platelets, the maintenance of hemostasis, depends on three of their properties, the endothelial supporting function of platelets, the ability to form hemostatic plugs and to release lipoprotein material.

If they are removed from blood the above process may stop and may cause death of the person.
