If an asteroid hits earth its effect on our planet would depend upon its size means. smaller the asteroid smaller will be the impact and larger the asteroid larger will be the impact

Earth's atmosphere usually protect the planet from asteroid less then 150 feet in diameter

object upto 3000 feet across create intense damage

we already faced such impacts in history and called them as mass extinction

asteroid more than 5000 feet across would kick up dust and cause an impact winter

here is some interesting fact

Chicxulub crate in Mexico was probably the result of an asteroid impact

dinosaur extinction was also due to asteroid impact

Explanation:

The more energy is released, the more damage is likely to occur on the ground due to the environmental effects triggered by the impact. Such effects can be shock waves, heat radiation, the formation of craters with associated earthquakes, and tsunamis if water bodies are hit.
