Lignification is known as the formation of secondary walls.

If the cells are lignified at particular period of time, i.e. a cell is lignified it loses its living character at a maturity level.

If the cells sclerenchyam is not lignified than the water can easily penetrate within the plants, which contain microorganisms that can harm the plants.
