Q) What will happen When Magnesium is added to Copper sulphate solution?

Answer :-

When magnesium is added to copper sulphate solution, the blue colour of the copper sulphate solution fades away and it turns colourless.

This is because of the formation of compound known as Magnesium Sulphate.

Formula of Magnesium sulphate is as follows :-

 \boxed{\sf{MgSO_{4}}}

The reaction carried out is :-

 Mg(s) +CuSO_{4}(aq) \rightarrow MgSO_{4}+Cu(s)

Also,

We can observe brown coloured depositions on the magnesium particles dropped in the solution.

These brown coloured substances are of copper.

REASON FOR SUCH CHANGES :-

Magnesium is more reactive than Copper. Hence, Magnesium displaces the copper from the Solution and copper is left idle.

REACTIVITY SERIES :-

 \begin{tabular} {c | l} Element & symbol \\ \cline{1-2}Potassium&K\\Sodium&Na \\Barium&Ba\\Calcium&Ca\\Magnesium&Mg\\Aluminium & Al\\Zinc&Zn \\Iron&Fe\\Nickel&Ni\\Tin&Sn\\Lead&Pb\\Hydrogen&H\\Copper&Cu\\Mercury & Hg\\Silver&Ag\\Gold & Au \\Platinum&Pt\\ \end{tabular}
