The liquid rises in the tube due to a net vertical force = 2πr σ cos θ.

r is the radius of the capillary tube

σ is the surface tension

θ. is the angle of contact (angle between the vertical glass tube and the tangent drawn at the point of contact to the meniscus.

If the height of the tube is h which is less than the maximum capillary rise H, the surface of the meniscus is no more concave and surface becomes horizontal and θ. becomes 90 degree and cos 90 = 0 and hence there will be no more pulling force upward .

The liquid tends to go down again, but the surface tends to become concave again.

An equilibrium position is attained where the component of the force in the vertical direction balances the small capillary rise h
