When a stone gets heated for a long time and then quickly plunged into water , cracks appear in the stone.

It is a type of weathering( wearing of the stone) caused by change in temperature. This is called physical weathering.

On heating the stone for a long time, it expands but when immediately cooled it tries to contract. This results in formation of cracks in it.
