If the blood rich in oxygen and the blood rich in carbon dioxide mixes with each other, it will result in respiratory failure. The blood on mixing will neither be able to deliver the oxygen to the cells nor will it be able to collect and deliver the carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs for purification.  

This will lead to asphyxiation, ultimately leading to the collapse and failure of the respiratory system.
