If the large intestine had been a long coiled tube it would not be able to perform its various functions. The faeces formed by it would get stuck in the coil and block the entire digestive system. There would be no scope for excretion.

Explanation:

  • The large intestine marks the almost end of the digestive system. It is in fact the final section of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • It is shorter than the small intestine in length, but it is relatively thicker in diameter. It is about 5 feet  in length and 2.5 inches in diameter with a T like structure.
  • The large intestine wraps around the border of the abdominal body cavity from the right side of the body, across the top of the abdomen, and finally down the left side.
  • This  structure enables it to perform its many functions . These include converting food into faeces, absorbing essential vitamins produced by gut bacteria while converting the digested food into faeces, and reclaiming water from the faeces.
  • If the large intestine had been a long coiled tube it would not be able to perform all these functions. The faeces would get stuck in the coil and block the entire digestive system. There would be no scope for excretion.
