What will happen if the negatively charged rod is brought towards the charged metal plate of the electroscope

then the metal plate will move away from each other

So If the electroscope is already positively charged, the seperation between the leaf (gold leaf probably) will reduce and they will come closer but when the electroscope is already negatively charged, no change will take place.
