If the plasma membrane ruptures or breakdown then the cell will not be able to exchange material from its surrounding by diffusion or osmosis. Thereafter the protoplasmic material will be disappeared and the cell will die.

The main function of plasma membrane is that it is semi permeable which allows the entry and exit of some important compounds. If plasma membrane ruptures or breaks down all unnecessary compounds would enter into the cell and would damage the cell.
