If the respiratory tract is not most the dirt particles in the inhaled the air will not be removed from air in the nasal cavity and reaches lungs and create problems to lungs.

However the mucus helps in absorption of the harmful microorganism and prevents  from any infection. On the other hand the the mucus helps in temperature regulation of the air which enters the lung.
