When there was no paper, other media were used to scribe things. Papyrus, a mashed out reed from the Nile, was used to record information in ancient Egypt. Animal skins, tanned and toughened, were used in the Middle East during Biblical times. The cave man used charcoal and crushed fruit and plants to paint info on cave walls. In Babylonia, clay tablets were written on while the clay was moist and then hardened to keep permanent records. And slabs of stone (e.g., the Rosetta Stone) were used throughout ancient Earth to write on by chiseling the rock away.

The point if this...if there were no paper, mankind would be using something else to record valuable permanent information.
