What will happen ,if variations are not present / occur in organisms ?
Answers
if there are not variations in organisms there will be no speciation and therefore no ecosystem and no food chain
Take a look at the Irish potato famine. When the potato blight, Phytophthora infestans struck, there was no variation in the population so the entire crop was susceptible to the blight. The blight is still in circulation but new varieties of potato were bred to resist Phytophthora and of course the fungus will continue to adapt in the ongoing competition between parasites and their host. Another example is the cheetah in Africa. Due to a pair of population bottlenecks around 100000 and 12000 years ago cheetahs are now functionally, genetically identical. In a constant environment this may or may not be a problem but when the environment changes, the lack of variation may doom the cheetah to extinction, so simply stated, a lack of variation in a population leads to no raw materials for natural selection to work on.
