Everybody has the right to live. We cannot take anybody’s life be it you are a jain or a non-jain.

The population of Jains in world is about 4.4M as per 2016 census. There are a few of them who have become jain sadhus (saints), there are a few who strictly follow the religion and there are few who don’t. They just have the tag of jainism .
The reason why i am giving you the statistics is that, there are many people who have the jain tag on but aren’t really jains. They them selves do not accept it, but still put the tag around. They don’t follow the principles of Jainism.
The main principle of jainism is Ahimsawhich means non violence. Telling that we do not kill anything at all would be false, because in our daily life we do kill a few organisms. However, our main motto is to control this and follow non violence as much as possible.

Coming to your question- Yes there are jains who kill mosquitoes and cockroaches. I am a jain and live in a jain family as well. I won’t lie, but yes my family members do kill mosquitoes and cockroaches. When there are too many mosquitoes around, they use the bat and kill all of them in one shot. Also, they use baygon sprays to shoo away the cockroaches. Also , when there are too many ants during the rainy season, they spray hit all over the area. This is all mainly to avoid infections and diseases like dengue. I won’t deny that when they do it they are going against the principle and killing them in large numbers which is wrong.

However, the jain sadhus and a few Jains never kill them. They believe that they can stay safe despite not killing any of them. They place Neem leaves where ever they sit, so that all the mosquitoes go away. Sometimes they pack themselves from top to bottom, put a rug over themselves and sit in order to avoid those stings.

There are Jains who still exist who don’t kill any of those insects. On the other hand, there are a few, who do kill them in order to stay healthy.

Ahimsa parmodharam.

No. The one who doesn’t even think of killing a micro organism that is almost invisible in root vegetables, can never kill those innocent insects who are clearly visible to eyes.

I know the real question is if Jains don’t kill them, how they get rid of these.

Mosquitoes, etc. take birth mostly in dirty environments. So, cleaning your home properly and not allowing water to store in open is a way to prevent mosquitoes. However, if they take birth after so much care also, natural repellents like kerosene oil, neem smoke can be used to get rid of them.

If you happen to see a rat in your home, you should not scream rather you should take a mice cage and put a delicious smelling bait into it. The rat will come to you on your own and now you can leave the rat in a park or faraway place from your home.

Use napthelene balls to prevent cockroaches. Make sure you have dry cupboards and walls.

If your grains are affected by insects, put them under sun. They will leave the grain due to heat.
