most of the wicks are made up of cotton or threads of cotton and one of the properties of cotton is absorption.
When you place an thread on any (non thick) liquid you will see it will absorb the liquid and makes itself wet even where it isn't in contact with the liquid. The same way the oil rises up to the wick in a lamp.
