If we are talking about the crow - water - pebble story,

If we use cork intead of pebbles, the cork keeps floating on the water, not giving a chance for the water level to rise up, due to the difference between their densities.

Reason :

  • The density of cork is much lighter than the density of the water. Density of the water is 997 kg/m³, whereas the density of a solid cork is 240 kg/m³. So, neither the cork submerges, nor the water flows out or rises up.

  • Why pebbles can do that, but not the cork? Again! Although the cork appears bigger than the pebble, the matter they contain are totally different. Pebbles (crushed stones) have a density which is equal to 1602 kg/m³, where as the density of a solid cork will be around 240 kg/m³. So, no chance that a cork can replace the work of pebble here.

  • It means, for any object to get submerged in a substance, first the object needs to have more density compared to that of a substance.

  • The only way to submerge the cork in the water is by applying more pressure on it continuously.
