What will happen if we will not cover the mixture of ammonium chloride and sand while heating?

For separating ammonium chloride from sand we used the method of sublimation. This method is used to separate solid mixtures in which one of the component can sublime on heating . The solid which sublimes escapes as vapours while the other one is left behind .
