There are several things you need to concentrate on:

Weapons for defence, attack, and movement.

Defence against hordes, lone zombies, and even other people,

Secure shelter.

Transportation

Sustenance, water and food

Community

Orientation.

Long term survival

There is no need for body armor thicker than thick nylon clothing or leather biker threads. The reasoning is simple: armor is heavy and cumbersome and you won’t be defending against bullets…you’ll be defending against hordes. Leather is lightweight and will easily prevent bites and scratches without slowing you down. Hard armor is great for ballistic attacks (being shot) but the reality is that if you are shot in it, even if it doesn’t penetrate the armor (thus being survivable) you are still going to be knocked down and in pain, which makes you easy food for the zombies. The point is light armor is best.

Now, you’ll want to have an impressive stockpile of ammunition for your SUV. This will give you plenty of firepower for a successful defense, but will also make you a valuable addition to a community of people. That is your best bet to survive: Community. Even Rambo needs to sleep every now and then and can’t watch his back the entire time. It helps to have friends you can trust.

Now you need to think of sustenance. You should have at least 10 gallons of fresh, potable water in your SUV, and the ability to filter your own with a Lifestraw or similar device. In addition you’ll want at least a months worth of shelf-stable food. Canned food is great for this. Freeze dried food, despite being a go-to survival item is also good, but remember it will take a decent amount of water to rehydrate it so stock accordingly. Additionally you’ll want seeds and lots of them. Once you have found a secure place in which to set up a homestead or community you’ll want to thing long term survival and that requires farming and hunting.

Now you’ll want a secure position that is easily defended that you can make into a home. You’ll want a remote cabin that is easy to heat and with a good roof. Harsh winters can be just as deadly as a zombie horde if you are not prepared. Now here is where the zombie scenario breaks down. Whether these are “walkers” from the walking dead, or Darkseekers (Hemocytes) from I am Legend, winter is very important. In Walking Dead (and other genre media) Zombies are dead. They are rotting meat. Well, what happens to dead flesh in sub-zero temperatures? You’ll be able to move freely in the winter as they will all be frozen. Whether or not they reanimate when they thaw is something to be weary of, but you can pick them off easily with a spike and a hammer while they are frozen, thus paving the way for an uneventful spring. If they are Darkseekers then they are living (just diseased) but, likewise, they are exposed to freezing temperatures, which without proper protection, would be sure to be lethal. In either case, winter is your friend.

Now you’ll need to figure out a long term plan. This is where you orientate yourself to your surroundings. If you are in a permanent and defense position it’s important to know every approachable angle into your position. This means either an obstacle rich environment, like a remote cabin high in the mountains, that is also rich in game for hunting. Once you have established that it is a defensible position you can create pike fences and other obstacle based defenses and start clearing small areas for crops and create water collection systems.

Now, on to the final part, and the part that is most crucial for long term survival. Community. You, by yourself, in a fortified position in the mountains with food, water, and both fully self-sustaining, will survive, but it will be a boring and depressing life and one you may find yourself not wanting to live. If the horde doesn’t get you, you may end up wishing it had. If you aren’t in a fortified position you’ll find yourself constantly fighting for your life. In either case the “lone wolf” isn’t a good situation. You can remedy this by involving trusted friends and family. Make sure you can trust them but remember your survival is linked, they’ll need you as much as you need them. By having multiple people you can have a real community. Someone can be in charge of hunting, another for growing, another for security, another for food storage and prep, another for childcare (if there are young children) and education, another for maintenance, etc etc etc. Everyone pulls their weight and everyone survives, and they thrive as well.
