i) Osmosis is defined as flow of solvent towards the highly concentrated solution through semi permeable membrane.Semi permeable membrane is a type of membrane which selectively allows flow of solvent through it like Red Blood Cell(RBC) has a membrane which is semi-permeable.

ii) When a Red Blood Cell is placed in concentrated saline solution exosmosis occurs and the RBCs shrink due to excess loss of water.

Red blood cells placed in a solution with a lower water concentration compared to their contents (eg 1.7 per cent salt solution) will lose water by osmosis and shrink. Water will diffuse from a higher water concentration inside the cell to a lower water concentration outside the cell
