When solvent molecules present in a solution move from their region of higher concentration to their region of lower concentration i.e. from a less concentrated solution to highly concentrated solution when separated by a semipermeable membrane, the phenomena is termed as osmosis.
Practically 0.9% salt solution is observed to be isotonic to the cytoplasm of red blood cell i.e. the cells placed in 0.9% solution will not show any movement of water. But a 10% solution is hypertonic to the cell cytoplasm so the water will move out of the cell due to osmosis. This will result in shrinkage of the red blood cells.
