let the side of the square = x
Therefore, area of a square = (side)²
= x²
Area of the square when sides are doubled= (side × 2 )²
= (2x)²
= 4x²
Therefore, when the side of the square are doubled its area will increase by 4 times
Area of the square when sides are halved = (side)²/2
= x²/2
Therefore, when the side of the square is halved it's area will also be halved

If length of side is doubled
→ side = 2a
→ Area of square = (2a)² = 4a²
Area become 4 times when side of square is doubled.
