Answer:
Better, but not perfect yet.
If education was totally free, then everyone would attend classes.
Then, they would realize how terrible it is.
And then they would democratize it.
And then, it would be quality education.
See, we don't just need free education. We need free, quality education.
The internet and world wide web have given us free education. I can google anything I want, read about it, apply it, and learn it. However, this is an extremely passive experience.
I basically have access to billions of textbooks in the form of written word, audio, video, and pictures, but I don't yet have a way to learn this material with people, have a way to be corrected by someone with experience, and gain relevant accreditation for comprehending and legitimately understanding the material.
College and university, supposedly, solve this problem. You're put into classes with people, a lecturer shows you the correct way of doing things, and you obtain a degree in the subject that solidifies your knowledge, making you legitimate.
The problem, of course, is that college costs insane amounts of money. Seriously, it's actually made me feel physically sick before. It's too much. Way. Too. Much.
This means that people; lovely, creative, imaginative people, are forced to view education as an investment where they must receive a return equal to, or greater, than what they put in. They look at the "highest paying jobs", obtain a degree in that field, then miserably spend years, sometimes decades, of their lives miserably paying that degree back.
And, here's the worst part:
Those people indoctrinate themselves accidentally, and come to believe that their children must get degrees as well to succeed and have a happy life.
And so, nobody does anything about it. Nobody tries to implement a better solution. There have been people who've tried, for sure, but look at what they're up against.
People can't admit to themselves that they've wasted their lives. They can't accept that they got a degree in a subject they don't care about so they could make money to pay that degree back. It's extremely depressing.
Then, worst of all, those people get positions of power and authority where others, who haven't been indoctrinated yet, look up and listen to them, and agree.
High school seniors, who a year ago were boundless with energy and imagination (and sadly can never fully realize their potential because of the state of public secondary education), begin only talking, thinking, and worrying about the following things:
College admissions
What they'll major in
What jobs are available in 4 years when they graduate
How they'll make tens of thousands of dollars to pay for this
And they become sad, boring, unimaginative, and quickly indoctrinated into the system. It's disgusting. I've watched it happen to nearly all of my friends. Everyone I care about, who just a couple of years ago were full of curiosity and creativity, are now complete drones. They talk about their co-op placements, future job prospects, how much money they're going to start making, the retirement savings plan they saved up. They jokingly talk about the credit card debt they've amassed.
"Oh, it's fine. I'll pay it off as soon as I'm done school."
No they won't. I know they won't.
Then they'll be 40, their idea muscle atrophied, hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, and raising kids who are going to do the exact same thing again.
It's time to do something about it.
The biggest travesty in the history of mankind is the way we've treated education.
The world, properly educated, would be completely different from the world we live in today. You wouldn't even recognize it.
The first thing everyone would realize is how precious and fragile the Earth is. They would stop polluting, instantly. They would feel sick to their stomach when they throw plastic out. They would faint out of worry as their car blows out disgusting fumes of exhaustion into the atmosphere, slowly poisoning our home.
The next thing they would do is try to automate as much as they can, so that everyone has free access to:
- Water
- Food
- Clothing
- Shelter
- Healthcare
