if a magnet is brought near a compass then definitely the compass will try to align itself along the direction of magnetic field of the magnet.

The needle of a magnetic compass is ‘just’ a small bar magnet that is balanced carefully so it can rotate freely. Both the compass needle and the bar magnet are labeled correctly (usually). So the N of the larger bar magnet will repel the N of the compass.
(Do not confuse Geographic North with Magnetic North. Magnetic ‘poles’ do not exist. Somewhere up in Canada the earth’s magnetic field lines dive down into the earth. Your compass points along the direction of these magnetic lines.)
