They are endangered mostly because of all the pollution, over collecting them for trade in exotic species and their natural habitat loss.
Unfortunately the only way to save them is to improve our habit of not spreading pollution in their natural habitat.
If at all they are extinct scientists will try their best to bring them back by using older DNA.
If they are wiped out they will affect the food chain. The other animals lose an organism that they feed on which can cause their numbers to decrease
