Given :

Wavelength of a blue ray of light in air , \lambda=450\ nm .

Refractive index , n = 1.33 .

To Find :

The wavelength of same light when it goes into water which has an index of refraction of 1.33 .

Solution :

We know frequency of light is only source dependent , therefore it does not change with change in refractive index .

Therefore ,

c=\nu\lambda

Here , c=3\times 10^8\ m/s .

We know , velocity in refractive index is given by :

v=\dfrac{c}{n}\\\\\nu\lambda'=\dfrac{\nu\lambda}{1.33}\\\\\lambda'=\dfrac{\lambda}{1.33}\\\\\lambda'=\dfrac{450\times 10^{-9}}{1.33}\\\\\lambda'=338.35\ nm

Therefore , wavelength of light in water is 338.35 nm .
